Bringing order to tuk-tuk services in Laos

It has been observed that the drivers of some tuk-tuks and jumbos in Vientiane are rude to foreigners when they question the often exorbitant charges cited by drivers.

While most Lao people prefer not to use tuk-tuks and jumbos, visitors often have no choice but to do so and are the most common fare-paying passengers. But some are amazed at the high cost of this basic form of transport.

Head of the Tuk-tuk and Jumbo Association in Vientiane, Mr Sibounheuang Soumphonphakdy, told Vientiane Times on 27 October that the association has about 1,100 tuk-tuks and jumbos on its membership list, and fewer than 100 drivers don’t want to be members.
